Nike's "Skateboarding IS a Crime" Campaign

In one of the grossest displays of copyright infringement, Nike has stolen the intellectual property (album art, graphics, logos, etc.) of Dischord Records/Minor Threat for their latest skateboarding campaign. They made no attempt to ask for permission and Dischord's official statement starts: "No, they stole it and we're not happy about it." Blottered endorses a ban on all Nike products and the smashing of skateboards over the heads of kids wearing Nike apparel, but we hope there's a huge backlash from the skating community first. Glen E. Friedman and Stacy Peralta better rally the Dogtown faithful.
Nike Campaign "Borrows" Album Art [Pitchfork Media]
Comments:
F Nike!!!

you are missing the point...ripoffs and parodies have been a staple in skateboard graphics for years...what makes it ok for Sheppard Fairey to spoof minor threat and not Nike? The funny thing is that Nike SB does more true to skating than other so called "core" skate shoe companies...bottom line is:don't get your panties in a bunch...skaters did this, not nike, and we all know that skaters don't give a shit so get over it...

anonymous has a point

who hasn't stole a damn graphic in skateboarding?

this is stupid
find something worthy to protest you losers

nike is a multi-billion dollar company- this means they hop on the trend and fuck it till the end

Hey ass-fucks, perhaps you didn't read what Dischord Records had to say about it. From the Pitchfork article:

We spoke to a representative from Dischord Records, Minor Threat's label, if Nike had asked to borrow these images. They said the following: "No, they stole it and we're not happy about it. Nike is a giant corporation which is attempting to manipulate the alternative skate culture to create an even wider demand for their already ubiquitous brand. Nike represents just about the antithesis of what Dischord stands for and it makes me sick to my stomach to think they are using this explicit imagery to fool kids into thinking that the general ethos of this label, and Minor Threat in particular, can somehow be linked to Nike's mission. It's disgusting."

What's YOUR fuckin' point? You wanna tell an independent music label to quit whining cause Nike co-opted their logos, etc and a "cool punk rock edge (dude!)" the label is DIRECTLY against? If skaters are "cool" with this (or anyone for that matter), fuck 'em.

Please remove your puckered mouth from the bleeding asshole of big corporations. This isn't a lame argument of "punk rock or not, man" but it's like the KKK using a NAACP logo to promote their cause.

obviously discord is a bunch of bitter old bags with no sense of humor. sure the swooshtika sucks. but not being able to see the irony in their standard-overpaied-but-unoriginal-art-dept. rip-off really shows how punk rock they are over there at discord.

swooshtika represent!

Killer argument, you win. How did I not see this before?!? They ARE bitter old bags! And oooooh, it's IRONY! Never crossed my mind. You sure are a clever one.

Thanks for the shining the light up my ass, but if you could push a little harder I'd appreciate the whole flashlight up there.

Iron(y) Cross reprezentatadiabfa!!!

This is all just one guy talking to himself, isn't it?

"nike is a multi-billion dollar company- this means they hop on the trend and fuck it till the end"

Really? Since when are 14 year old Minor Threat, and Dischord Records, a trend? Their day has come and gone. Get over it.

"This isn't a lame argument of "punk rock or not, man" but it's like the KKK using a NAACP logo to promote their cause."

Please dude. Exaggerate much?

Plus the dudes that made up "Minor Threat" havn't recorded anything since, like, 1983. That doesn't keep them and Dischord from putting out record after record. Suckling the last drips of cash from the Minor Threat teat.

Everyones a crybaby.

Come and gone? Yet Dischord is still operating as a business and Minor Threat albums are still in print. (Crazy, I know!!) Nike steals intellectual property to buy "street cred" and I guess it works on baggy pants Pearl Jam ass munches like you. Enjoy!

"Plus the dudes that made up "Minor Threat" havn't recorded anything since, like, 1983."

Son, you might want to check your facts on that one. They all went on to other bands well into the late 90s and some still play today. Of course, I don't think any of them opened for System of a Down so maybe you never heard of them.

this is worst thing i have ever seen. minor threat, who had such an impact on the world that all these FUCKTARDS TALKING SHIT can't even understand, being raped by nike. listen, i don't care what you say about minor threat now, but back when they were breaking ground nike was making air jordans.

Nobody who likes Nike likes Minor Threat. I don't really like Nike and I hate Minor Threat. It's just a joke, Nike isn't making any money off of Minor Threat because of their tour poster. iPath, 'eS, and several other shoe companies have ripped off Nike's designs, so it all evens out.

SHUT UP AND GO BY A BIG MAC AND A COKE. WHILE YOUR AT IT BUY A MCDONALDS SKATEBOARD TOO.

CRY NOW BITCHES AND PAY LATER

Nike has branded itself so well that they've made you think that its a bunch of skaters sitting around thinking up ideas for their skate ads. your so off. this idea was most likely contrived in a boardroom by a dozen stiffs that everytime they see a skater or punker for that matter, cringe in disapproval. the project, or brief was then passed down to an internal or external creative department who was told to make it look "cool". This department then came up with a blatent RIP-OFF (and that is what it is) of a band and label that makes 1/1,000,000,00 of the income they do daily or yearly. Simply put, it's different when little skate companies rip off big corp.'s. simply because the big corp. can afford to lose a little face and the small skate company can't afford to pay them. But when the reverse happens, it's a completely different story. Not even comparable. For you dip shit's out there defending the action of a multi-trillion dollar company i gotta wonder where your coming from. Unless your in bed with them............and don't be a COMPLETE idiot Sheppard Fairey did not spoof Minor Threat. He makes his work from images of people and tweaks them to make it his. Not direct representations of art work that has already been done. Then Andy Warhol ripped off Marilyn Monroe. There is a fine line, and Nike leaped right the fuck over it. LAME.

Hey, as long as ripping off graphics have been commonplace in skateboarding, cease and desist orders have been, also.

dischord has every right to be pissed, since nike could obviously pay any royalties or anything asked by dischord.

also, nike is a bunch of suck. the end.

"Come and gone? Yet Dischord is still operating as a business and Minor Threat albums are still in print. (Crazy, I know!!) Nike steals intellectual property to buy "street cred" and I guess it works on baggy pants Pearl Jam ass munches like you. Enjoy!"

Minor Threat records are still in print because every new generation of retarded middle-schoolers are tying to cop some "street cred" by buying the same 20 fucking songs over and over again. Minor Threat Remastered? What a fucking joke.

"i don't care what you say about minor threat now, but back when they were breaking ground nike was making air jordans."

Uhh. Yeah. Care to discuss what 'product' had a bigger impact on cultures and subcultures?

Before there were queer-ass skate shoe companies like DC, iPath, 'eS, and a handful of others (who all manufacture their shoes in the same fucking sweatshops) ripping off Nike's designs, some pretty notable skaters rocked Dunks and Jordans.

And if you think a multi-billion dollar company, like Nike, doesn't have the intelligence to realize that the skateboard community is a fickle bunch of elitists, you're a strait-up moron.

The people behind Nike SB were chosen for a reason. They care about skateboarding more than you realize and they understand brand loyalty.

It’s easy to jump on a bandwagon and hate all over Nike, Starbuks, McDonalds, Microsoft whatever. Your unintelligent rants do little to change my opinion. Nike could buy Dischord Records if they wanted, and put out an EP of Ian MacKaye rapping over Jeff Nelson breakbeats. You think they wouldn’t fold for the almighty dollar?

Your idols and ideals are a joke.

thing is...it's not an ad campaign proper.....it's just a poster for a tour...big whoop. trust me...i'm no fan of Nike. but it's just a poster... whatever...i wanna see how it unfolds...kind of fun.

Honestly, If your tripping that badly over something like this you are getting a lot of attention for it. Yea sure any copyright ingringment without permission is wrong, but Nike is obviously trying to get people on the streets who recognized "Minor Threat" to look at their Parody. Honestly, its skateboarding, if it was NASCAR I would say more power to you. This demographic could care less about your record label then their grandmothers calostamy bag. Let the people get mad and cry, and let the others be psyched. Nike is a corporation that finally has a winning formula that core skaters appreciate and sometimes things can go wrong and apparently this item has turned a sour crowd to its attention. In all I am still going to buy Nike Dunks or Classics and watch Gino Ianucci skate and i definatly don't care if you make a good buck or you don't get anything buy lawyer fees. Get over it. Parodys are legal.

the ironing is delicious

Nike is greedy, Fuck Nike, Do you like Nike?
Yes?
You are a fag!

Its not a fucking parody its theft.

It amazes me that people brush this off as ironic parody and not copyright infringement/intellectual property theft, ESPECIALLY when it involves a company (Dischord) that wants ABSOLUTELY NO CONNECTION to the other (Nike). Forget all the motives, intentions, blah blah bullshit. It's just illegal.

Dischord wouldn't want one fuckin' red cent from any sales resulting from this. If you don't believe or understand that then you have zero grasp of the situation and the Blink 182 albums are so far up your ass that you're vomiting shit-caked cock. Take your skate magazines and jerk off in the bathroom, just don't shoot your wad where it's not wanted.

HEY MAYFIELD? Do you know why Minor Threat records are still in print? Because Ian Mackaye is one hell of a musician. You think music just happens, and then 20 years later its oblivious? Wrong jerkoff. Minor Threat made more of an impact in 1983 in D.C. with 26 songs than you ever will in your entire life dishing them on some lame ass website. So go ahead an associate yourself with jocks who wear Nike, listen to rap, and live in white suburbia.

Oh yeah let's take a look at some of your errors. DC, although popular, stand for Danny Way and Colin Mckay Shoes, dumbass. Two revolutionary skaters. iPath uses hemp in their shoes. Sweatshop, no.

Furthermore, you cock sucking dipshit, Ian Mackaye has refused to sell Dischord Records and Fugazi out for more than 10 years. Fold for the almighty dollar? They used to have free shows in DC every summer and keep all their other shows 10 dollars or less, along with their shirts.

You make uninformed jabs at my heros because you have nothing to look up to, jerk.

Hmm why are you hardcore music listeners crying? Aren't you supposed to mosh not cry? Stop complaining... don't take a "red cent" from Nike if you don't want to. Go mosh and pick up 15 year old girls.. o by the way i heard Nike is making Camo shorts so you can look ultra tough. Expect matching Dunks to accesorize you toughness you queers. Take your tears and wet your head so it makes for a easier glide to BIC your heads. Also gey a ultra tight fitting Hurley(owned by Nike) T shirt to show off you hardcore muscles that you mosh with. Get over this whole thing you autistic dancing faggots.

Before I read all the banter I thought, "Oh, cool poster." I know of one other tour poster that Nike SB did, and it was for a Purple Reign tour. Yup, you guessed it, they ripped off Prince and nobody gave a shit, because it's a goddamn poster. Find something real to complain about, and stop trying so hard. Also, DC shoes stands for Droors Clothing shoes.

danny way was on droors.

skateboarding rules, minor threat sucks ballzzzzzzzzzzz. end of story.

"they ripped off Prince and nobody gave a shit, because it's a goddamn poster."

nice try cocker-spankler, but uh, i think nobody gave a shit because...IT WAS PRINCE. what kinda butt-queer are you??? minor threat and prince are not comparable unless you suck your mom's dirty vadge all day.

did someone say "mosh"? oh you silly kids, you sure do like to bang your heads and lick the spooge from your animal chins. NO ONE used the term "mosh" in the early 80's (or *ever* in punk) and only a cum-gurgling tonka tyke would make the reference. this aint anthrax, douchebag!!

i said it once, i'll say it again: skate hard dude and pump your friends, just dont bring minor threat into your homoerockit fantasies.

isn't punk rock dead?

or did it just get a desk job?

hey kids, it's mr. bill the moshing faggot! perhaps he can explain what "moshing" is exactly. i think he's confusing it with the time his dad fucked the neighbor's ring-wormed dog in the ass and gave everyone in the family a dirty sanchez in the middle of the night. i guess that's why bill stays under the desk and gives us blow jobs in exchange for creamy pie facials. thanks bitch.

btw, punk WAS dead (where it belongs!), until nike decided to lick its old wrinkled grandpa balls. please don't excite the old man, he was buried with a hard-on and it's not polite to fuck the dead.

why do we...
isn't there more "x" things we should...

i guess "x".
you "x" slaves.

middleclassman.

Hey what a great idea, lets show how cool and alternative we are,by supporting a Major conglomerate ripping off an independent label, and then later we'll really learn how to show our skate-edge by proving Ollies can be done in Armani suits and Wing tips.
Then we'll really rock out and go to church.
Maybe later we can all just do as we're told

well that kid who is making fun of you guys is right. Stop taking things so serious. Get of the internet and go do something productive. This thing is a mass of negative energy and your only feeding that guy Bill with humour. If you really wanna prove something use this board as a vent for political ensument and justice against Nike.. otherwise go get some converses.

Mr. anonymous got angry. i haven't heard such banter since i put a tampon in my friend's frutopia. It seems that your "mature statement" backs your view completly and it made sense to. Please explain more about this topic and what is going to happen in the end. Or maybe more people will cry and Nike will still not care and i will go get Dunks for 35 dollars and sell them for 500 three months later. have fun

HEY JACK.

Let me explain why you’re still a moron who hangs on to his “punk rock” youth.

First of all, Ian Mackaye is NOT one hell of a musician. He’s fucking average. AT BEST. I can name off hundreds of other musicians who have had a more substantial impact on popular and/or sub cultures and the evolution of music. Get a grip Jack. You’re swingin’ on the dudes nuts. Lyrically he’s on some 19 year old angry white kid shit. But… I guess that’s what you relate to.

Secondly, D.C. doesn’t stand for Danny Way and Colin Mckay Shoes. They don’t stand for much actually. Because any “skate shoe company” that flows a surf team are fucking goobers, strait up. 90% of their designs bite Nikes. And, oh, by the way, their shoes are manufactured in fucking Korea.

IPath is also a fucking joke. Let me list the shoe designs they have stolen from other well established companies: Crickets/Grasshoppers were designed by Nike before Minor Threat ever even got together. Nike called them Dunks. Cats are actually Clarks Wallabees. And the Dharma is their newest twist of the 20-something year old Vans slip-on. Their entire team is a bunch of wack hippies, so your strait edge boy Ian Mackaye wouldn’t be down with their shit. And, oh, by the way, their shoes are ALSO manufactured in fucking Korea. Sweatshops? Yes.

And finally, Minor Threat shows and t-shirts are only 10 bucks, because that’s pretty much all the scratch an angry broke white teenager could come up with to catch a shitty strait-edge sweat-fest.

Basically, you’re a goober. Face facts chump. Your taste in music is weak. Your anti-capitalism views are half assed and hypocritical.

By the way, you probably have a pair of Converse in your closet. Nike owns converse. Nike also gives millions of dollars a year in philanthropy efforts. How much does Dischord records give? None.

One more thing. I’m white. I have been listening to good music since the early 80’s. I went through my punk phase. Until I realized that it’s pretty much all bullshit and musicianship was thrown out the window. I still listen to some early punk stuff. The only decent band on Dischord was Gray Matter. And even they were only good before they reunited in ’92. Now a day, my musical taste varies so much it would boggle your mind to discuss auditory pleasures with me. I still skate pretty much everyday of my waking life. And yes… Occasionally rock Nikes. Gasp!

Once again: You’re a chump JACK.

"Stop taking things so serious. Get off the internet and go do something productive."

A wha?? Sure man, thanks for the enlightenment. I love when people like "Mr. Clemmington" make statements like that. As if we only exist within these comments and aren't doing anything else besides following this retarded thread, or believing it means one squirt of nocturnal anal leakage. Ever occur to you that we're actually NOT taking this crap seriously and goading douchebag Bill to stick around is half the fun?

I mean really, the guy said "i haven't heard such banter since i put a tampon in my friend's frutopia" (gooood one, dude!!) and this is supposed to be his A-game? That's some weak and inbred shit. Take it back to the mini-ramp and don't return until you've removed the "I'm an assclown" sign from your shirt.

Mayfield, are you that retarded? You actually sound like you're being serious. Don't bust a nut or anything, but Ian and co. *were* 19 (and white, gasp!) in '81-82. Kinda makes sense the music sounded that way but they grew older (yeah, that happens as hard as it is to imagine) and their later bands sounded nothing like Minor Threat.

Philanthropy?? So NOW you're comparing the ethics of Nike vs Dischord. Jesus dude, it's a waste of time if it even needs to be explained to you. You're better off bashing in the heads of the homeless with your Dunks than pretending to actually give a shit.

Yeah, I'm retarded and I'm taking this shit seriously. Simultaneously. The fact that you replaid shows you’re getting a little heated yourself. This whole thread says something about both of us.

Your making me repeat myself now. Like I said, lyrically he was on some 19 year old angry white kid shit. He was fucking average. AT BEST. Even fucking average for an angry 19 year old white kid. I can name a few who have done it better. Significantly.

Most of Dischords later bands also sucked just as hard. What's your point?

By the way, comparing the ethics of Nike to Dischord is seams pretty relevant to me. Who has a more positive impact on society?

Anyone who might suggest that Dischord and/or Minor Threat are deserving of some sort of compensation are totally tools. Way to be punk-rock-anti-establishment guys. Way to go!

n. pl. par•o•dies

1. A literary or artistic work that imitates the characteristic style of an author or a work for comic effect or ridicule. See Synonyms at caricature.

b. The genre of literature comprising such works.

2. Something so bad as to be equivalent to intentional mockery; a travesty: The trial was a parody of justice.

3. Music. The practice of reworking an already established composition, especially the incorporation into the Mass of material borrowed from other works, such as motets or madrigals.

Mayfield, wipe the cum off your face. It's embarrassing and nearly impossible to talk with you while it's dripping out of your nose. 1) Forget the actual music, who gives a shit. You don't like it. Rah rah, good for you and your superior audio masturbation techniques. Maybe you like Scottish folk dance or Snoop Dogg, either way what you think of the music is completely irrelevant. 2) If you think sweatshop Nike who makes shoes so outrageously expensive that kids kill each other for them...wait, save your breath, spare me the "oh dude, anti-capitalism is so gay" crap. But if you truly think Nike is making the world a better place than discussing this with you any further is pointless. Look, I eat at McDonalds and buy into all the corporate bullshit out there but that doesn't mean I don't realize it's bad. 3) Dischord wants money from Nike??? Come again in your mom's ass?? How fuckin' dumb are you? They simply want NO CONNECTION to Nike and prefer that their images are not used without permission. This isn't a matter of parody, regardless of how little grasp of the situation you command. It's straight-up theft to market a product with someone else's copyrighted material. Plain and simple. If you can't wrap your head around that then I hope no one ever takes anything from you without asking first.

Hey, that gives me an idea, is it cool if I steal your skateboard and fuck your sister with it? Huh?? Pretty please! I promise to call her a "parody" as I'm bone-riding that bitch .

You're right. I'm totally getting way too into this thread. Purely entertainment though.

I never said Dischord wanted cash man. Read it strait. I said "Anyone who might suggest" that they were "deserving of some sort of compensation" were tools. Plain and simple.

And it seems to me, that it's the Dischord fans who blew this topic up all over these internets. So if Dischord wants this shit to just disappear then you’re doing them a disservice by posting here.

Dudes just got heated because I called out Minor Threat as a half-assed punk band, and Dischord fans as crybabies.

Nike is fucking rad dude. They give us things like this to argue about on the internet while working graveyard. They also employ kids in sweatshops who would otherwise be out enjoying childhood. Keep those little fucks off the street. The streets are where you get into filthy punk rock, hip-hop or methamphetamines, instead of in the malls where they can hone their hyper-consumerism techniques.

For all you know, Nike and Dischord planned this whole bullshit out. Look how much hype is going around about this. Shit is getting sold on both sides of the fence.

Ok that's it. I'm out. I gotta cop me some red and black high tops with fucking air pumps to match the Minor Threat shirt I just picked up at Hot Topic... Gnar!

Nothing is sacred. Not Nike. Not Dischord. Not even my sister.

take a closer look. its not even the same picture. big fucking deal. bottom line is, everyone now knows nike is doing a tour. mission accomplished.

I like cupcakes.

Nike swoosh on all Social Distortion albums from now on!

"Nike SB does more true to skating..."

I can't believe someone said that.

Support your local independent skate shop and local independent brands. Nike SB was created by a dude in a tie wanting more market share for stockholders. End of story. If you like to support guys in ties, rock your Nikes (and get laughed at in SoCal - I've seen it happen).

If you get laughed at its because your pushing mongo. I love how people are trying to prove points with such words as "cum" and other mature words. Sure i have posted one or two but im not trying to be taken seriously. These acts of immaturity are those of the joking obviously and can not be taken seriously except by those who are sitting at home typing in anger becuase they are fired up about a simple gesture. Please enjoy the skateboarding at www.switchskate.com and to top it off, we might just have our selves a parody sometime in the future.

But ya know.. its kinda good to see people are actually doing a show to protest this action.. I like that good job. Its kind of nice to see you guys care soo much to. Way kind.

Would they care if it was a company like Nss?? No because they cant get any money out of them. Just like people accuse Nike of being greedy, Dischord Records are greedy. Money rules the world like it or not.

I skate in basically nothing but Nikes, nobody has ever laughed at me, only asked where I got them from so they could buy a pair themselves. Faggot

"Support your local independent skate shop and local independent brands. Nike SB was created by a dude in a tie wanting more market share for stockholders. End of story. If you like to support guys in ties, rock your Nikes (and get laughed at in SoCal - I've seen it happen)."

My pops wears a tie. I support what he does.

Hate to break it to you but my local independent shops are in southern California. Liberty (a classic), Active (who started out independent as fuck) and a bunch of others started selling Nikes a long time ago, ass clown. Who the fuck are you, and where are you from? Nike SB is probably bigger in southern California than anywhere else in the states. Tons of dudes skate Dunks, and you ain’t getting’ laughed at unless your fucking stee is all janky and awkward.

Which it probably is.

". I gotta cop me some red and black high tops with fucking air pumps to match the Minor Threat shirt I just picked up at Hot Topic... Gnar!"

dude, nuff said!...and by far the funniest shit on this entire thread!!

You're the one rocking the Nikes. Did your mommy buy those for you at the mall?

Do you guys wearing Nikes also stroke your China wood?

Shit, I skated nike's first in my town. It was all farmland till 15 years ago when houses were built and i moved in so i know i was like first to skate nike's. Then everyone askin where i get them, now im selling nikes to every god damn kid! Serious. People wan't them for some reason. That zoom air stuf really does help, if other skate shoe brands really cared about skating, why don't they come up with some good technology like nike's. Serious the zoom air bags are soo simple anyone else can make similar stuff. Nike SB is actually TRYING! The people running Nike SB are not people in suits. People in suits. They are skateboarders. A poster with any musical parody come from the skater at heart, not nike. If you don't like nike, then buy somethin else and thats it, no complaining.

Here you go crybabies.

GNAR! Skate humor is so best. Tre rad. Anyway, you can praise Nike all you want (it will be quite ironic when you unintelligent douchebags won't have jobs after our "free-market capitalism rules!!" corporations outsource any shit-level position you could hope to get to ten million Chinese) or you can wear your super-awesome Nikes on your fuckin' hands all day for I care. Hey, you can even in "cum" in them all night. (Is that immature enough??) One simple request: just leave Minor Threat out of it. You don't care about them and lots of us don't care about Nike. End of story. Move along now.

the point is, it's kind of like... black people can call each other nigga but white people can't call black people nigga, y'know??

righteous parody is a one way street.

small indie companies serving a subculture can rip off/parody behemoths and it can be seen as kind of a political subversion, a way to "talk back" to mega-brands.

but when big brands rip off the styles of these small concerns, the only possible reading of it is a cynical attempt aligning to cool -- and making more money.

so it is pretty foolish for nike not to have seen the danger in it, especially taking on discord/minor threat, whose whole stance is ostensibly against big-business.

as an aside, Globe a large skate shoe brand has been doing the same thing, before nike, for their world cup of skateboard comp --- the first poster was a rip off of the great rock'n'roll swindle cover, the second the the nevermind album cover.... so an idea that was kind of lame to begin with is pretty stale anyway.

You guys are still here? What the hell, have the Vice magazine message boards been shut down or something?

krucoff, we finally made it big time.

-sac

I have no doubt Nike is popular on the farms and in the malls. However, after selling/buying many shoes, it is my opinion that Sole Tech (Etnies, Es, etc.) have a big edge on Nike and other brands in terms of a technical skating shoe. Furthermore, I'm not sure if you guys know of a brand called Dekline but, I just bought a pair for 42 bucks and I must say it is the best shoe I've ever skated on. Old school outside, new school inside. Their insoles are outstanding.

"Nike SB does more true to skating..."

you can't believe someone wrote that? I wrote that, and despite the typo (should have said 'nike sb is more true to skating"), its still true...if you knew anything about the skate industry you would know this...the nike sb line generates much needed revenue for SMALL INDEPENDENT SKATER RUN SHOPS THAT WOULD ARE HANGING ON BY A THREAD....don't hate, they do more than Vans, a "skate" shoe company whose shoes are also made in asian sweatshops, and who sold out skateboarding the second alternateens in malls started rocking thier shit...Vans couldnt even help foot the bill when one of their pros JOHN CARDIEL broke his back and was stuck in Australia...his family had to ask for fucking donations...there's your "core, for skaters by skaters since day one" company for you...oh and for all you punk rockers that think Vision Street Wear is the new hot underground shit, let me remind you that Vision was the lamest, most corporate piece of shit company ever to exist in skateboarding...wearing that shit got you beat up by the real punks, and i think its funny that all these "hard punk bands" are endorsing their shit...keep in mind that for every dumbass that buys a $400 pair of diamond dunks, there is a shop in some bumfuck town that can pay their electricity for another month...

i just saw ian mckaye, he was wearing nike shoes, a nike sb shirt, a nike hat, nike wristbands, nike flair, and he was driving a nike car....

this would have been a big deal 10-20 years ago

Seriously, would everyone please take their illiterate circlejerking to Superfuture or something? They care more about the nuances of skate shoes than we do.

Never bought a pair of nikes in 28 years.
I swear i'm going to go a buy a pair tonight just to
piss off all the 'i know "what's real"' trustafarian types.
Hope they skate as good as people say.
Vagrant

Ooooh, that's sticking it to us trustafarians!! Work it harder baby, buy 3 pairs!!

(Do you need a loan? I'm swimming in cash, hash, and Google stock over here.)

someone said 'core skaters' earlier.
that was funny. keep coming.

yeah thats why it was in quotations...

hello im jim formby and ya i think nike sb pwns

I wonder if Warner Brothers got as pissed as you people got when Blind used their characters back in 1990. For the record, Nike didn't use the album art-- they used an original photo inspired by the MT art. I can agree that the M,O,R and THREAT were lifted from the MT logo with stroke added around the lettering. Check out the quote below:

"However it is more disheartening to us to think that Nike may be successful in using this imagery to fool kids, just beginning to becoming familiar with skate culture, underground music and DIY ideals..."

I have reason to believe that a person who was 'familiar' with 'skate culture, underground music and DIY ideals' designed the campaign and not a Nike white collar CEO.

You non-knowing punks may also find some knowledge that in the early 1980's when Minor Threat were still a band that alot of skaters wore Nike brand sneakers.

Please don't be jealous that Nike is sucessful and people will buy their stuff regardless of a few people pissed over so-called "copyright infringement."

I'd like to see a full on Dischord backlash with a big ass Nike Swoosh for album art on a compilation.

wow, i was just about to shoot a flick of my buddy sitting on some stairs. i was thinking about putting the words 'medium threat' beside him too. good thing i found this or id be in real trouble with you minor threat loving cock mongers

Was Mr Nike or the person behind it a real skater? nope - therefore they cannot keep it real

They won't give a shit about anything skating when it is not such a great marketing or sales tool... and the lame ass 'nike skate (sellout) consultants' start to wonder if they were pimped

you are dealing with different cultures here - one where ultimate decisions are based on consumerism and profit - and one where you need to earn, but lifestyle and friends still come above profit.

The issue for me is that Nike should have nothing to do with skateboarding full stop.

And if any big skate(surf) company starts to model its business workings on the likes of nike, then they are sellouts

Live happy - keep the freedom ,keep it real.

You think you have freedom in the US? That is a joke - just got back and I have never seen so many rules = anywhere in the world. You can't even roll down the pavement in some places without police cars stopping you ha ha!!

How about those signs that say no loitering or animals I had to laugh at the prospect of being arrested twice for chatting to a friend in the shade while walking my dog!

skaters did not make up these rules maybe nike would (eg no skating on the handrails at nike headquarters ha ha - you are such fake assed losers..)

ciao for now

This is stupid you can't stop skateboarders. They are every where and they will not stop untill the end. F*** Nike and there F***ing campaign YOU CAN'T STOP US AND YOU NEVER WILL!!!!!!!!

reading this is like having aids in your eyes. anyone know when sandlewood dunks are out?

no one is going to read this but i have to say that if you disagree with the fact that nike has enough money that they could pay a normal person to make a new logo and then carve it into their foreheads you're just sucking nike off. why rip off minor threats album cover, change the name to mean the complete opposite and then act like it's okay. i wish bin ladan would start rockin a goddamn american flag baseball cap or something, see how all those fucking basketball cock sucking mother fuckers like that shit. i hope all of you who think that having a problem with what nike's doing is being a crybaby, should just suck nikes cock and then kill yourself, please. oh and supposing you do- STOP SKATEBOARDING. i hated when volcoms gay ass ripped on circle jerks, now the worst of the worst is fucking with MINOR FUCKING THREAT. that's just wrong (PERIOD)

i skate but HATE nike its just nike that does this. adio(gay) asked cky and him for there rights and so did almost and enjoi and transworld for different bands and all i dont see why nike doesnt have to play by the rules

"The people behind Nike SB were chosen for a reason. They care about skateboarding more than you realize and they understand brand loyalty."
sandy bodecker, 52 year old head of nike's skateboarding division, does not skate and never has. what was the reason they brought him in? because he did so well winning over the international soccer community after nike QUIT skateboarding the first time. thinking about it, why did nike quit skating? did they run out of money? hmmm, nope. was skating less of a sport then? apparently to nike... is that the kind of 'care about skateboarding' and 'loyalty' you were talking about?

i think its funny that u think u are even going to dent nikes income from boycotting there "SB" line.to them they lose there weakest and smallest line of prodicts and even so a stupid thing isnt going to change the fact that people are going to buy there products. i think u all are a bunch of dumbasses for even trying all this skatboard loyalalty bullshit. honestly who cares, haha most skaters are gay as hell kids who sucked at all sports in highshcool and cant hold a steady job cause of somthing stupid like pot or tattoos
