Orenthal James Simpson
It's been decades since the Buffalo Bills' offensive line known as 'The Electric Company' turned on 'The Juice,' and a decade to the day since said Juice was acquitted of murdering Nicole Simpson and Ronald Goldman. An old Steve Allen adage is that "comedy equals tragedy plus time," though it didn't take long for folks to start with the funny (in fact, it took about thirty seconds after I tuned into the the infamous car chase -- "Run, OJ, run! White Bronco don't fail him now!"). But OJ has just emerged from the depths of his Florida accused-felon retirement at, of all places, NecroComicon. You heard him right -- OJ was signing autographs at a southland nerdfest last weekend.Asked by a reporter if he was being paid for his appearance, Simpson replied, "I'm not doing this for my health."Considering that we've played basketball at the recreation center on Potrero Hill in San Francisco where neighborhood homeboy OJ is still prominently featured in a mural, we wish him the best -- there aren't many cases where a black man accused of killing some blonde chick goes free, so however you feel about the justice meted out at the trial, it's a black drop in a big ass white bucket.
Tom Riccio, a promoter of the event, said Simpson attended the convention as a favor to a friend who was paid in advance to arrange for the weekend appearance.
Riccio told Reuters that Simpson, who lives in Florida, was "not getting a penny" for his visit but was using the event as a dry run for possible future public appearances he might make in exchange for donations to his children's college fund.
